When deciding on buying a home there are usually a number of inspections in order to determine if the structure is sound. However, little is researched about the backyard of a home, aside from how wide it is and if a pool, treehouse, or whatever you might want fits there. For John Sims, this was also true, but as it turned out, his backyard held much more than he had ever imagined. Although John Sims purchased his new property from a known friend and this made him at ease with the transaction, his new residence, located in Tucson Arizona, had an alleged history behind it. The former owner only told him a bit about it when John was moving in, making reference to an alleged story that no one knew for certain if it was true. This would be the starting point of a story which John Sims never signed up for, but that would become a project that almost became an obsession as the time went on.

Haven’t you heard?

Apparently, there were rumors that something about the backyard of the house was not quite right. The previous owner was never interested in finding more about it. With this ambiguous hint, John could have just continued on, doing the pertinent changes in home decor he saw fit. However, as he unpacked, he had a nagging feeling, an idea that kept circulating through his head. Would he be able to live there without knowing if his friend was right? Was there more to his backyard than what met the eye? Were there any unseen depths to his simple Tucson home?

Buying into the mystery

John's curiosity got piqued and now he couldn't put the idea to rest. After all, there was something he didn't know about his own home! Almost as a joke, he told his friend to get him a shovel immediately. His friend laughed but John actually meant it. That was when he realized that if he was going to get to the bottom of this, he would have to make an investment. Would it be worth it in order to find out what secrets his backyard held? Or would it be a waste of his time? Either way, the seed was planted and it kept growing in John's mind.

So how to get started?

It did take John a little bit of time to get things going. However, he had a goal and he would work towards it. He wanted to investigate and hopefully find the answer to the mystery. Was there really more to his backyard than what met the eye? How much would he have to change? It wasn’t a whole home remodeling project but still, it did mean big changes and messing up with the landscape of his yard. So John decided to go for it and without much further ado, he decided to dig into the backyard and see where this would lead him. There were mysteries to be solved!

Against the hottest weather

John started burning calories right away. After all, it was the middle of the summer and Arizona is known for its very hot weather during this season. So as John started digging, it became increasingly hard to withstand the hot weather. And the digging wasn’t very successful. His first attempts were certainly disheartening and he thought about giving up more than once. After all, he had just gotten started, not much time had been wasted. What if everything was in fact just rumors? Would his efforts be worth anything after all? Was there really something to be found?

Getting into the rhythm

As John continued to dig around, he got into a certain routine. He didn’t feel any closer to achieving success but he wasn’t willing to surrender either. However, he did start to consider the fact that maybe if there was something hidden in his backyard, it could have been lost to the elements and beyond any recovery. John needed to do some research, see if there was any way to find more information on what his backyard held and maybe where to concentrate his digging efforts. It was a good thing that he was in good health because this was certainly a tiring time for him.

Finally…a lead!

As John started researching on his house's history, he found its official construction plans or blueprints. However, there was no clear information regarding anything buried there. As he kept looking though, he found something that looked promising. Apparently, a swimming pool company named Whitaker Pool had built something there. However, his house didn’t have a pool. Who builds an underground pool? Could they have built something else? Ideas started going through his head but he had no more information to go on with. This finding though certainly gave him hope to dig deeper.

Calling in the professionals

Now that he had some sort of a lead, John decided to be more organized in his search. He decided to call in the professionals and hired experts in this type of thing. Even though he wasn’t really hoping to find gold, metal detectors were involved. These were stressful moments for John. He had no idea if they were actually going to find something and, of course, he didn’t want all his time he had invested to have been a waste. As the professionals went over the backyard, nothing was happening. However, when he was almost ready to give up, the metal detectors started showing that in fact…there was something there.

Narrowing the search

Fortunately, the metal detectors had a reaction more than once. This helped John define an area that he could concentrate on. Now he had his hopes renewed. His anxiety was there, as he finally had an indication that there was actually something there! And even more than that, he now had an approximate idea of where to concentrate all of his efforts. It had definitely been worth it hiring the extra help but now, he could take charge of the whole project again and see what was hiding in his very own backyard. What had been buried down there? John started digging and, sure enough, he quickly hit something. What had he found?

A first hint of what was to come

From the sound the shovel had made, it was obvious he had hit something like metal! What if it was only piping that for some reason was in the backyard? Should he call a plumber service? John decided to simply go at a slower and more careful pace in order to not upset whatever he might find. After all, if, in fact, it were a pipe, he didn’t want to run the risk of damaging it. Or even worse, if it was something like a septic tank, he didn’t want to break it open. So he kept digging around his finding slowly but surely. What he found caught him by surprise.

The door to the unknown

John had discovered what seemed to be a hatch! What could that lead to? It was definitely some sort of an entrance, however, even though he wasn’t a doctor, he knew there were some dangers involved. After all, it was a hatch that probably had been closed for decades. Any type of dangerous stuff could have been down there, from mold spores to toxic gases. He opened the hatch slowly and careful while holding his breath. He almost fearfully looked in...And what he found was way better than what he expected.

There’s a long way down

There were actually stairs! Almost welcoming him to this new discovery, there were some spiral stairs heading down the somewhat dark pit. At first, he thought they were blades but then he realized they were steps leading down! What could be down there? However, they looked pretty old and he didn’t want to end up calling an ambulance due to a nasty fall. Besides, he didn’t know how deep under the stairs would go. John decided to be cautious, which would prove to be the wisest choice and the safest thing to do.

His background came into play

Someone with a different background and training might have tried and gone down the stairs. Thankfully, he had been the captain of the Rural/Metro Fire Department which meant that he knew a thing or two about having an accident due to making impulsive decisions. He had had to rescue his fair deal of people stuck in absurd places due to attempting to do something just like what he almost wanted to do. Before deciding to explore further down all alone and finally figure out the big mystery by himself, he decided to take a breath and reconsider. For the next step, he would need some help.

Teamwork is the best work

John quickly got on the phone and called his friends. After all, he couldn’t do this on his own. If the stairs were to give, he could be gravely injured, and if something fell on top of him, he could probably even die. It might have sounded dramatic, but it was the truth. So he needed help making sure the pathway would be safe to go down into and also needed someone to keep an eye on him in case something would happen. After all, there would be little he could do if he would get stuck on his own there. His friends all came by and were more than willing to assist.

Making a plan

John and his friends sat down to plan how exactly they would go about it. First of all, it was necessary to clear the area around the hatch, make it as wide and accessible as possible so that he could comfortably go down. They actually developed a sort of blueprint as well as a plan on how to continue on to finally be able to find what lay below. There was a lot of anxiety but also excitement for everyone. It was time for John to take the first step towards the unknown and find the secrets lurking underneath his backyard. But first…

Solid surroundings to get started

They first decided to actually repair the surrounding structure that was around the stairs. Since the stairs themselves didn’t look safe, they wanted to give it a more secure base so that it would be safer to head down. John was still not able to set foot inside whatever the stairs led to and safety should always come first as he very well knew. He had patience and decided to start with the concrete design he and his friends had made. Time went by slowly, but the anticipation kept growing. Sometimes, good things are worth the wait.

First the foundation, then the exploration

John and his friends worked tirelessly to build a safer way down. This required multiple batches of concrete. The whole idea was to make it strong enough so that there wouldn’t be any risks of it crumbling if someone went down. They would all speculate about what they would find down there. No one had any actual idea but as time went by, the ideas kept flowing as they kept working. It was almost a restoration work but they had no idea to what end their efforts would lead them. However, they still had to fight through some obstacles.

Going against the elements

It was still summer and Arizona wasn’t really forgiving. They started thinking that maybe whatever had been down there for decades could get damaged by the heat. After all, now that the hatch was open, it was more exposed to the heat of the scorching Arizona summer. Furthermore, as they were working, the sun was pretty punishing (although men tend to not worry too much about general skin care). Therefore, they decided to set up a tent as well as a cardboard Sonotube that had the purpose of protecting the structure.

The final step

It was a good thing that his friends helped out as otherwise, John might have had to break the bank had he hired construction workers. His buddies had actually installed an electrical line and a pipe. The pipe wasn’t for water but for being able to pump in the fresh air. The purpose of the electric line was to be able to actually see whatever was down there when John went down. After all, it was underground, so it was bound to be pretty dark. Finally, after all this time, they had everything set for the first exploration.

All set for exploration

It felt almost as if they were trying to build a home but it was really an attempt to make it into the safest way down. The construction looked great and was secure, so the time to go down was near. John was excited because finally, he would find out what was down there. He had a feeling of what the discovery could be but he was ready to find out in person. However, there were still some things that needed figuring out. After all, the stairs still seemed rather unsafe.

The last adjustment

Since the stairs didn't look safe, they had to figure out what to do about that. Now that the surroundings of the stairs were safe and they wouldn’t crumble on top of John when he went down, he had to actually find a way to get down there. They couldn’t work on the stairs from where they were so John had to find the way in. Well, if he couldn’t go down using the stairs, they would have to figure out an alternative. How could they make sure that John wouldn't end up in a hospital because of a nasty fall?

Time to head down…at last

They managed to lower some portable stairs and attach them in a safe way so that John could go down. He did so safely, looking practically like the Tomb Raider as he went down, exploring the unknown. It was certainly less of an exercise compared to all the efforts they did to dig up, find the location, and build, with the help of his friends, a safe tunnel down. It was finally time and John excitedly went down the stairs they had put there. He carefully went down and finally, set foot on the bottom of the finding.

First man re-discovering new grounds

When John looked around, he realized that there was an entire construction surrounding him. There was no need to keep digging and no grueling excavations would be needed. What he found was actually structurally sound. Finally, he would find out what lay there. There was an actual door leading somewhere else and John was able to open it and look inside. The money he had spent on this whole process had led him there. And now, it was time for the actual discovery. John was about to unravel a 50-year-old mystery.

A place with a story

John was finally about to find out what the inground pool company had built in his backyard. As he went to the tunnel to which the door opened up, he saw that it was some sort of a chamber with fiberglass ceilings. The problem with that was that it didn’t look totally stable and some had even fallen off. Although no more excavations would be necessary, it still wasn’t 100% safe. After all, if it fell off, he could breathe in residue and that could be harmful to him and to others.

The long-buried secret

Even though he had to be careful with his exploration, John did manage to grasp what had been hidden down there for decades. There were no precious metals or sinister findings, but an empty structure that had had one single purpose. John and his friends quickly realized the historical importance of what they had found. A testament to a forgotten era, when people would be willing to dig deep into their savings account just to have the illusion of safety. John’s efforts had not been in vain after all and finally, he knew what was lying under was an apparently inconspicuous backyard.

A testament to the past

John’s discovery was nothing more and nothing less than a nuclear shelter. Apparently, Whitaker Pools decided to help those families that might have been a bit paranoid during the missile crisis and the long-lasting Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. When they decided to invest money in feeling safer, they would build a nuclear shelter on their backyards! What John and his friends had uncovered was one such shelter, which had been forgotten after the end of the Cold War and was now re-discovered, thanks to John’s curiosity.

Standard family care

As it so happened, this wasn’t the product of a family’s paranoia; this was actually seen as a sound decision back in the day. After all, with so much uncertainty, building a nuclear shelter meant that the man of the house worried about the well-being of his loved ones and he was actually making a logical and responsible decision. Tucson was one of many cities where families had a backup plan in case a nuclear war got started. Erring on the side of caution had never been taken in a more literal way! But there was another reason why there were so many shelters in Tucson…

A town more involved than anyone thought

As it turned out, the inhabitants of Tucson were justified in worrying about their home security. After all, 18 ballistic missiles had been placed in the city and they all had nuclear warheads. Tucson was one of the American missile strongholds during the Cold War and if a confrontation had risen, maybe Tucson would’ve become a target due to this top-secret content. After all, intelligence and counterintelligence were the weapons of the Cold War and this information could’ve leaked out. John’s finding did raise a question; just as there were uncovered nuclear shelters, could there be uncovered nuclear missiles?

Nothing to see here

Since the end of the Cold War, the missiles had been dismantled and nothing remained of them except in museums. Although they might have been close to being deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis, it was fortunately diffused and nothing more came of it. No mass destruction and no disaster recovery took place, contrary to what most feared. And the majority of nuclear shelters had also been completely sealed off after the cease of the war. John’s was one of the remaining ones that, although completely underground and with no outside sign of its presence there, remained almost intact. John decided to keep researching…and what he found was surprising.

An entire community

Now that John knew that aside from a home, he had a nuclear shelter on his portfolio, he published his find on Reddit. This news became widespread and he was actually able to get in contact with people who also happened to have a nuclear shelter in their backyards! While his friends gave him fun ideas of what he could do with the space, John was determined to make it into what it was meant to be. He wanted to find Cold War authentic items to give the space decoration in keeping with the reason why it was constructed in the first place. But how would he achieve this?

Internet saviors

Thanks to his Internet service providers, John was able to create a GoFundMe page in which he detailed the purpose of his fundraising. He wanted to restore his nuclear shelter. First, he would need to actually build a safer and practical way to go down that would allow him to have his hands full with material to fix the place. After all, although the structure was incredibly preserved, it still wasn’t completely safe and he needed help for that. He would actually need to take out the current stairs and install new ones in order to get started. The Internet community did not disappoint.

His very own oasis

After all his work, John wasn’t about to just leave it like that. Thanks to the money he had gotten, he was able to actually find the memorabilia to put into his very own man cave/Civil Defense Museum. The idea was to make it a comfortable place to be while also showcasing an exposition of America’s past. After all, it was a memorable time, in which no one felt safe in one of the safest nations in the world. Little by little, John had been working on getting everything he needed in order to achieve his goal.

The first steps of many

Thanks to the donations, John has been able to actually take out the old staircase and install a new one which is much safer. Now, he can go down to the shelter in an easier way, without risking a terrible accident. He has been able to raise $390 which has given him a headstart with his efforts. His goal is to reach $2K in order to be able to make the proper remodeling. He has even published the plan so that everyone knows what the funds will be used for. Hopefully, he will be able to reach his goal and keep working on his project.

They Stick Together Almost Always

How insensitive people can be when it comes to commenting on the Instagram profiles of kids? It seems some people have no sense of decency as they often leave crass remarks on the pics of the twin sisters. The most common negative comment that the adorable twins get on Instagram is that they don’t look happy on some of the pictures. They simply forget that the kids need to purposely look serious for some fashion shots. The facial expression of a model depends a lot on the photographer and the overall brand itself.

They Look Completely Natural

You will often come across photos of kids on Instagram wearing heavy makeup. This is not the case for the Clements twins who often appear for photo shoots with little or no makeup at all. Ava and Leah Have Their Own YouTube Channel

Leveraging on the fame and recognition they had already garnered through their amazing photos, Leah Rose and Ava Marie launched their own YouTube channel. In January 2018, they started a new chapter in their lives with this new venture in their career. The purpose of their channel is to share healthy and tasty snack recipes. Of course, their mother helps them in preparing the food, but it is a sight for sore eyes to see these two beautiful girls teaching us what to cook. However, it was their music video made with clippings of their pictures and videos that got the most views - over 10,000 in total! It is a good idea though and will be a great career investment for the little girls!

The Mom-Dad Duo Embraced Full Time Traveling

With all three of their children running from one place to another because of their busy photo shooting schedules, Kevin and Jaqi decided to make traveling their full-time job. As parents, they needed to be around their children to take care of and look after them. Their children also felt more assured having them around, hence this was the best possible situation to make things work out. It kept them both worry-free, and they have embraced this new lifestyle, making the most out of traveling for shoots and auditions. After all, they must be so proud of their children's achievements!

Their Father Is Their Fitness Inspiration

Though parents Kevin and Jaqi are totally involved in their children's career, their father Kevin is actually a swimming coach by profession. He used to be the coach for Maryland, LSU, and USC. He also used to be part of the US national team. It is probably their father who is the reason behind their love for sports and their incredible fitness. The twins certainly look like they're in the best condition in terms of their health, banking on the amount of activity they include in their daily routine. Needless to say, daddy Kevin has a big influence on the pretty little girls!

Their Furry Friend Named Luci

It would be wrong not to mention Leah and Ava's furry friend when talking about their lives. Luci, their absolutely adorable pet, joined the family in September 2017 and has been their companion and playmate ever since. It goes without saying that with all the photo shoots and auditions going on, the girls hardly have any time for other activities. But their love for Luci is so pure and big that despite the time crunch, they do make time for cuddling and playing with Luci. It must be highly rewarding to have a furry friend who loves you unconditionally especially since they have already tasted fame and know the world out there can be quite tough. Having Luci in their lives ensures that they would be able to maintain good mental health amid the pressure of fame.

The Future Is For The Girls To Decide

It must be a huge experience for the twins to have attained fame at such a young age. Needless to say, their career has taken off with a great note, but mom Jaqi has made it quite clear that the girls will have their say when they grow up. Whether they want to pursue with their modeling career or want to change their career stream is totally up to them. As their mother, she will lend her 100% support to whatever they choose to do. We are quite sure though, that having started working at a young age, the twins already have an advantage over others and will be able to amass a good amount of wealth by the time they are adults.
